Coursing along the waterways in houseboats or country boats in a leisurely pace is the most popular pastime of the visitors. While moving on the backwaters, the village life unfolds before you without your interference into it, as would happen when you go by road. Rope weaving, toddy tapping, fishing, farming and animal husbandry activities, children playing in the water and along the banks oblivious of the visitors, etc. help you to closely study the places and people even without close contact. Watching the rising and setting of the sun over the serene expanses of water, with the wavelets glittering in the rosy glow and moving along the moonlit waters at night will bring out the poet in you.
Besides water cruises and watching the activities of the fishermen, you can go fishing yourself in the backwaters. You can also get out of water for village tours in the proximity, enjoy an elephant ride, engaged in water sports, drink in the sun on the nearby beach where the public are kept out, go on short trips to the nearby places of interest, visit a coir making unit and learn the process, visit a nearby church, temple or mosque, especially if there is a festival going on, which is not quite rare during the summer
