Kathakali ('Katha' is story and 'kali' is stage performance) is the most famous performing art form of Kerala. It is a highly stylized classical dance-drama performance, generally presenting stories from Mahabharata and such other epics and mythology. Kathakali is noted for its elegantly appealing make-up of the performing artists, highly decorative and elaborate costumes of the characters, very expressive and detailed gestures and aesthetically perfect and well-defined body movements. All these combine with the anchor playback music and complementary percussion to captivate the senses.
Mohiniyattam ('Mohini' is beautiful woman and 'aattam' is dance) originated in the 16th century in Kerala and is one of the eight Indian classical dance forms recognized by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, the official academy of performing arts. Gracefulness of movements is the distinctive character of this form of dance and it is usually performed by women as solo recitals. Kerala Kalamandalam dance school, established by the noted Malayalam poet, Vallathol, did much to popularize Mohiniyattam. playback music and complementary percussion to captivate the senses.
This is a popular form of performing art created by legendary poet Kunchan Nambiar. As a rule, in the traditional form, there is only a single male actor, who wears green makeup and wears colourful and ornamental costumes and recites the lyrics himself while dancing and making suitable expressions with his face and body. The content usually criticizes the prevalent social and political groups and events in a humorous vein, with satirical lampooning.
Thiruvathirakali is a form of group dance of women performed on the day of Thiruvathira, which is celebrated as the birthday of Lord Siva. The accompanying songs describe the longing of Parvati for Lord Siva and his affection towards her. The slow and graceful movements executed by the group, traditionally around a lighted ceremonial lamp, nilavilakku, exude the amorous charm and grace of the mature feminine form. Rhythmic clapping of the hands accompanies the dance which follows a circular and pirouetting pattern. Now it has become a popular dance form for all seasons.
Originally practiced in Kerala, Kalaripayattu is one of the most ancient forms of martial arts and is the forerunner of Karate, Kung Fu and such martial art forms of other parts of Asia. It includes kicks, strikes, boxing, grappling, wielding weapons and healing methods. While the Northern Kalaripayattu, traditionally of Northern Kerala, gives more accent on flexible movements, jumps and evasions with training in use of weapons, the Southern Payattu (Adi Murai), traditionally of Southern Kerala, relies on techniques of making heavy impacts with empty hands, grappling with hand fighting and strikes on pressure points.
