Ayurveda is the time-proven Indian holistic science of restoring and maintaining the wholesome wellness of the mind and body. Kerala has gained universal acceptance as the only place in India where the traditional formulae and treatment methods of Ayurveda are diligently practiced in their original and pristine form. That is why thousands of people from the other parts of India and abroad make health-tourism trips to Kerala and return relieved and rejuvenated after an Ayurvedic treatment with genuine natural medications, traditional massages, etc.

Qualified and experienced Ayurvedic physicians together with well-trained and qualified medical attendants, masseurs and masseuses peel off ailments and years from you at Ojas, the ayurvedic health centre. Health spa is a part of the Ayurvedic Health Centre. Soothing and rejuvenating therapies that give permanent relief without side effects are prescribed and carried out with special diets, medications, oil baths, steam baths, inhalations, massages, etc. under the vigilant supervision and with the diligent assistance of professionals in each category.

Ayurveda is the science of life that was prevalent in India more than four thousand years ago and perfected more than two thousand years ago by the erudite sages of ancient India. It is one of the oldest systems of healthcare in the world and it literally means the "science of life" ('ayur' is life and 'veda' is science or knowledge). Ayurveda is a purely naturalistic system which depends on the diagnosis of the three humours of the body - vata, pitta and kapha - to achieve the right balance of health.

It is not merely a system of treatments for diseases like the allopathic system, but the holistic method of maintaining all round health and wellness. Its goal is the physical, mental, social and spiritual welfare of all human beings. It keeps healthy people healthy and cures sick people of diseases that may have troubled them for long. Not only the body, but the senses, mind and soul are treated in Ayurveda. It is based on the assumption that that man is made with five basic elements - earth, water, fire, air, and space. It makes use of body massages, herbs and yoga, besides several medications.

Kerala & Ayurveda

In Kerala, perhaps in Kerala alone, traditional and ancient Ayurveda is still practised in its pristine form helping keep this low-income area on top of the world in health and wellness criteria, as declared by United Nations and other world organizations. The salubrious climate, natural abundance of medicinal herbs and ideal location of Kerala make the external purification and rejuvenation therapies more effective and the high humidity helps to open up the body pores making the medicinal oils used in massaging get easily absorbed into the body.

Kerala is considered the only place in India where Ayurveda is practised with total dedication. Tourists flock to Kerala for Ayurvedic treatment for arthritis, paralysis, obesity, sinusitis, migraine, premature ageing, skin ailments and such other life-style-related diseases.

Ayurvedic treatment removes the root cause of the disease to give a permanent relief to the patient. It does not suppress the main symptoms to create new ones as side effects, as allopathic treatment often does. It is a multidisciplinary approach, unlike Allopathic treatment where the main stress is on medicines.

Medicines from natural sources are given in the form of powders, tablets, decoctions, oils, etc. These are assimilated into the body without causing any side effect. Corrections in life style, proper dietary controls and exercises are advised with the taking of the medications.

The different methods of treatment are given below:

Palliative Treatment

The increased doshas (vata, pitta and kapha) are reduced through this treatment. Palliative treatment consists of the following measures:-

  • Sneha Karma or use of oily substances externally (for massage etc) or internally.
  • Sweda Karma or fomentation.
  • Exercise.
  • Exposure to sun.
  • Exposure to fresh air.
  • Taking medicines which increase digestion.
  • Taking medicines which remove or destroy toxins in the body.

Purification Treatment

Panchakarma, or a five-pronged treatment, is used for purification, which is the removal of accumulated toxins and doshas in the body. The five processes are:

  • Vamana or induced vomiting
  • Virechana or induced purgation
  • Basti or enema
  • Exposure to sun.
  • Nasya or nasal medication
  • Rakta mokshana or blood-letting.

Other methods of Ayurvedic Treatment

Other than the above methods, fasting, rasayana therapy (medications for rejuvenation) and mental therapy including yoga and meditation are considered Ayurvedic treatments. Some even include several other treatments like auto-urine therapy for some ailments and fish-swallowing therapy for asthma in Ayurvedic treatments.

According to ancient Ayurvedic treatises, the main processes in Ayurvedic treatment are shodan (cleansing), shaman (palliation), rasayana (rejuvenating medications) and satvajaya (treatment for mental wellness).

Rejuvenation in Ayurveda is making the whole person, including his body, mind and soul, fit as a fiddle. Medications of the rasayana variety and external treatment using medicated oils and herbal extracts are used to rejuvenate people mostly suffering from several life-style related ailments. Some of the more popular methods of rejuvenating treatments are given below:

Herbal oils are kept moderately heated over low flame and applied over the whole body by two or four trained masseurs once a day. Each session lasts 60 to 90 minutes and the period of treatment may vary from 7 to 21 days according to the gravity of the ailment and the condition of the body. Rheumatic and paralytic ailments and nervous weakness and disorders are rooted out through this treatment.

Boluses tied up in muslin bags made up of medications are applied to the whole body or part of it by two or four masseurs for 60 to 90 minutes, making the body perspire profusely. The treatment usually lasts 14 days. It is very useful in rheumatism, joint pains, spondilosis, emaciation of limbs, cholesterol and blood pressure.

It is the same as above but the muslin bags contain njavara rice together with other medications.

This treatment usually lasts 7 to 21 days and is useful in insomnia, vatha predominated diseases, mental tension and certain skin diseases. Medicinal preparations in liquid form are poured in a continuous stream on the forehead of the patient, while he is lying in a thoni (wooden tub), from a dhara chatti (earthen pan with a hole) placed at a prescribed height. Oils, milk, tender coconut water and decoctions of herb extracts are the different fluid mediums used.

This treatment is for paralysis, arthritis, acute and prolonged constipation, etc. In this method of treatment some herbal oils and other medications are applied through the rectum daily for a period of 5 to 25 days.

A cap or head-band is fixed on the head and warm medicated oils are poured in it so that the oils stay on the head without flowing down for 15 to 60 minutes. This may be continued for 7 days and is very useful in facial paralysis, severe headaches, dryness of nostrils and such other vatha-related diseases.

For 14 to 28 days, the whole body is massaged using herbal powders. This treatment is useful in hemiplegia, paralysis, obesity and some other rheumatic ailments.

This treatment is very useful in obesity and diabetic gangrene. The body is stroked with medicated oils continuously for 45 minutes a day. The usual duration is 14 days.

In this treatment, herbal juices, medicated oils, etc are applied through the nose for 7 to 14 days. Prolonged and acute headache, mental disorders, paralysis and certain type of skin diseases are cured through this treatment.

Taking medicated ghee, in a proportionately increasing quantity every day, for a period of 8 to 12 days, is called snehapanam. This treatment is recommended in osteoarthritis, leukaemia, etc.

The patient is made to lie face down and warm medicated oils are kept over the lower back portion using herbal paste boundary to stop it from flowing away. All type of back pain and spinal disorders are cured through this treatment which lasts for 45 minutes to one hour daily for a specific number of days as per requirement.

For asthma, other respiratory problems, heart diseases and muscular chest pain the above vasthi is performed over the chest.

Medicated cow's milk is used for fomentation in this treatment. This treatment is effective in facial paralysis, speech disorders, Bell's palsy and other nervous disorders.
